THE HISTORY OF HARRIS TRANSPORT

Morris Removal Truck 1960s

Harris Transport began in its current form way back in 1974 after the purchase of the existing business from its second owner Mr Lawton Harris.

The decision was quickly made that re-branding the company would be an expensive exercise so the name and colours were retained.

In the days before deregulation of the transport industry a carrier had a licence to cart within a 30 miles radius from its base.  However, in a short time the company had successfully applied and got licenses to cover all of New Zealand, with the usual  objections from the lawyers at New Zealand Railways, who being government owned, had the monopoly on all long distance cartage.

During the early years specialist motor body builders and painters were in short supply so vehicles were purchased secondhand, rebuilt, fitted with home built van bodies and painted in the companys' workshop before going to work.

Initially the business performed a mixture of transport tasks around the local area as did many carriers in the industry at that time, however the downfalls of this were quickly realised as it was often the case to be shovelling 5 tons of coal in the morning and then scrubbing up to perform furniture removals in the afternoon.

The company has now solely concentrated on moving furniture for over 35 years and is still proudly New Zealand owned while most have been sold offshore or amalgamated.
